SBB Vol I No. 2 & 3

Schug’s Baumholder Bulletin
Baumholder week 2 April 8, 2007                                                                                Vol. 1 No. 2
Cousins,
Our Baumholder cousins have connected the dots.  Jutta (wife of Kunz) and Ursula had coffee with Horst Conrad who published a 500 page book on the Families and Residents of Boumholder.  It is full of family genealogies from Baumholder dating back to the 1700’s .  Baumholder is celebrating its 850th year.  Horst Conrad found documents on Karl Schug (1825-1869) at age 23 left for the US in 1848 with 200 Thalern (Prussia currency).   I do not know if this was a lot of money, if it was his inheritance or seed money.  I have not received the documents to date.
So far from the Book I have found:
  1. John Schug (1774-1834) was not born in 1791.  He was a bit older the Louisa Kirsch Schug (1794-1888).  His occupation was Wagnerschield (Carriage (wagon) Maker).  His Father John Peter Schug (1746) was a Schmiedemeister (Forger-Iron worker).
  2. That Rausch –Karl’s (Charles wife Catherina last  name) mean intoxicated (drunkard) in English.
  3. Have many new Schug’s genealogies in Baumholder.  When I get them figured out I will send you an ancestor chart.  (Have you sent me yours?)
  4. History of the Schug home that survived the 1888 Baumholder fire.  One of only two that did.  That the house burned down in 1910, was rebuilt and that apparently families don’t move much in Germany.
I sent an email to a bookstore in Baumholder to get a copy of the Horst Conrad book.  Names of the 15 pages they have scanned so far has family names of: Jost, Rausch, Kirsch, and Neumann.  The photos of houses were taken in the 1930’s.  I have attached two samples.
Ursula was busy typing her family line from Wilhelm (1811) to present.  Jutta  daughter of Helmut Schug (1913-1992) & Kunz Luthar her husband has just emailed some family pictures of Wilhelm (1882) children Erna (left) Frieda (right) Albert (back) and Helmut (front) and Wilhelm Schug (1882).
Mentioned also that Frieda Schug (1905) has a daughter in Texas that they will send me her address.
Ursula commented that I had solved my Baumholder puzzle, I wrote back stating the puzzle only is getting bigger.
I shared with them that I was keeping the cousins I knew updated.  I assume they are doing the same.
Cousins, I have thought about emailing Walter Schug of Schug Winery to see if he would consider putting in his news letter an add for Schug’s who descend from Tuscarawas Ohio or Baumholder Germany to contact us.  Their must be a few more cousins out there.  Walter Schug probably has the best Schug mailing list in the US if not the world.  Any volunteers to assist?   We can figure out the details later.
Hope you are having a Happy Easter.
Chuck

Next is confirmation that the Karl Schug left for the US in 1848 with 200 thaler. (the money off that time in Prussia.   Is that a lot?   I do not know.

Finally the” Baumholder book” by Horst Conrad I think is going to be mailed to me by Jutta, Lothar and Ursulsa.  Ursulsa said that there is no publisher so no way I can order one but they will mail me a copy.    The book is over 500 pages of pictures homes and families of Baumholder.

I have not taken action on the Schug Winery idea.  But Suzanna Byrens Oei  is looking into the idea.  More latter.

Note the passing on March 9th of Otto Schug (1937-2007) an Attorney by Occupation, in Indianapolis IN.  Son of Everett J  (1896-1960) and Charlotte (Skoronski) (1910-1979) Schug.  Surviving:  Joan his wife and children Victoria and Chip, and younger brother Peter.

Yours,
Chuck
